Welcome to our After School Program
1970-2019: 48 Years of Preparing Young Minds for a Lifetime of Learning
One change that has been huge for Veith House is the Youth Drop In Program. At the beginning of 2018, Veith House's executive director began to put apples out on the front reception desk for any clients to take. Staff started to notice that young ones from a nearby school were dropping in after school to grab apples on their way home. Slowly staff began to build relationships and trust with the Youth, and thus the program grew organically. The Youth themselves are bright, funny and extremely resilient. What started as three young ones dropping in for apples has turned into a low barrier drop in center providing up to forty-five youth with snacks, activities, volunteer staff, homework help, and a safe place to socialize. They have truly turned Veith House into a more vibrant place. We have created a space for them and are now starting to incorporate teaching them protective factors, discussing things like bullying or healthy eating in a low-pressure environment.
The R.E.A.C.H Drop In Program is available for youth ages 7 to12, Monday to Friday from 3:00pm - 4:15 pm. On their way home from school youth can stop in for a snack, fun and games. Veith House has a room dedicated to youth entertainment with a stocked art cupboard, board games, cards, Legos, computers, iPads and Xbox. Staff are available to help youth with their homework and reading. Parents/guardians are required to sign permission forms before youth attend. For more information call us!
Breakfast bags are available for students on their way to school each morning. Between 8:30 and 9:00 am, young ones are invited to stop in and grab breakfast on the go. Veith House keeps a stock of oatmeal, cereals, granola bars, yogurt and fruit to ensure that youth have a healthy start to their day.
Talk it Out: This is a workshop for students ages 9-12 who identify a female/trans/non-binary/two spirit/LGBTQ+
Rap Session: This is a workshop for students ages 9-12 who identify as male/trans/non-binary/two spirit/LGBTQ+
The workshops are a combination of presentations, conversations and tasks to build youth knowledge about some of those “tough topics” such as bullying, conflict resolution, confidence, body image, identity, sexuality, healthy relationships, puberty, etc. The workshops are alternating Wednesday evenings from 4:30-6:00 pm. These workshops are inclusive, safe spaces for youth of all genders. Parent/Guardian consent is required.
Cooking with Confidence is a new Veith House Program for youth registered in our R.E.A.C.H. programs. Our exceeding numbers no longer allow for cooking and baking during our drop-in hours. Youth can now sign up each month to be a part of Cooking with Confidence on the 2nd Tuesday of the month from 3:00-5:00 pm. Youth will learn basic kitchen skills and safety.
