MEET OUR TEAM
Lisa (she/her) - Executive Director
Lisa joined Veith House in June 2020. Although originally trained as a graphic designer - and a graduate of NSCAD - she moved to London, UK in 2001 found herself drawn to the not-for-profit world. She started out as a Communications officer for a copyright charity, but then moved on to a series of deputy and leadership roles in a not-for-profits, including a personal safety charity, a busy day centre for homeless people, a social care support organization, and a national membership and training organization for supported housing. In her last role in the UK, she served as the CEO of Mind Yourself, a community centre serving the health and wellbeing of the Irish in London, before returning to Nova Scotia with her husband to be closer to the ocean and her family. She now enjoys the challenges and rewards of working with the staff and volunteers at Veith House supporting the diverse community found in Halifax's North End.
Monica (she/her) - Administration/Finance
Monica Marsh is the longest serving member of the Veith House team and has been working as our bookkeeper and resident numbers specialist since 2006. Before Monica joined the team, her mother held the same job, making Monica part of the Veith House family even before she started working here. In addition to her admin/finance duties Monica helps community members with taxes and government forms, has worked and volunteered with other sister organizations, has been a leader in our C@P Site (@NS), and is always visible at our community events including the NECC Annual BBQ in June and the North End Tree Lighting event in December.
Katie (she/her) - Social Worker
Katie Scrine, BA, BSW, RSW., is an advocate for food security and accessible housing in North End Halifax. Katie offers short-term supportive counselling, advocacy and resource navigation for community members. Katie joined the Veith House team in 2016 working hard to build our growing Holiday Support program, supporting our Trustee program and making connections in the community . Katie is currently working towards her Masters of Social Work degree at Memorial University while continuing to serve members of the community here at Veith House.
Saida (she/her) - Newcomer Program Coordinator
Saida Gazie joined our team in 2018 creating and supporting programs for individuals and families new to Canada. She is an advocate and voice for community members as she supports them in applying for family assistance , finding inexpensive and safe rental units, job searches and connecting newcomers with free educational and programs for both adults and youth. Through programs, events and initiatives she has been successful in introducing a number of families to the Halifax community.
Skyler (they/her) - Youth Program Coordinator
Skyler moved from Pictou to Halifax in 2015 to attend Nova Scotia Community College, graduating in 2017 with a Child and Youth Care diploma. They have experience working with children and youth in schools, group home settings as well as various community programs. In addition to their passion for Youth Work, Skyler proudly identifies within the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, enjoys playing instruments (guitar, ukulele), singing and doing art. Skyler is excited to utilize their experience, skills and knowledge to provide meaningful programs and services to children and their families in the North End!
Leslie (she/her) - Supervised Access & Exchange Program Coordinator
Leslie Harrie, BA., has her degree in Psychology with a minor in French from Saint Mary’s University. She is currently in the process of completing her BSW with the University of Manitoba. She has experience working with children, youth, and families, as well as mental health. Leslie came to us in 2020 as a social work student, and her interest in helping children and families, along with her experience assisting with the Supervised Access and Exchange Program, ultimately led her to becoming the Supervised Access and Exchange Coordinator.
Liam joined the Veith House in 2021, coming on late in the season as the Urban Farm Assistant. Originally from Antigonish, he went to St. Francis Xavier University where he completed his BSc in Geology. After finishing his degree, he decided to pursue work that intrigued him from childhood, farming. He worked 3 seasons on Wise Earth market garden in Kelowna, BC where he also indulged in the bounty of outdoor activities (skiing, biking, hiking, ultimate etc.). Liam returned to Halifax in 2020, to reconnect with family and friends, and to pursue an entrepreneurship program for his vintage clothing company. Liam is passionate about growing food and appreciates the social, economic, and environmental benefits of locally and organically grown food. He is very excited to take the leap to the Urban Farm Coordinator in 2022, and share the role with colleague and good friend Justin
Liam (he/him) - Urban Farm Coordinator
Gerald joined us in June 2022. He worked for five years cleaning the Justice Building on Hollis St. in Halifax as their head cleaner/custodian. He also
worked a year with HRCE sanitizing schools through COVID. He is a proud foster parent and enjoys working with in an environment that includes
children and young people, as well as the diverse range of people who use Veith House's services.
Gerald (he/him) - Custodian
Arena (uh-ray-nuh) joined Veith House in June 2022, eager and delighted to return to community-based work. She grew up in Ontario but has called Halifax's North End her home since 2017. She has a background in peer support and facilitation, having spent her teens volunteering with the LGBT Youthline and Planned Parenthood Toronto. She is passionate about food and housing justice, supporting queer and trans youth, and challenging mental health stigma. When not at Veith House, you can find her reading a book, scouring thrift stores for fun vintage finds, or working up a sweat in spin class
Arena (she/her) - Office Administration
Justin joined Veith House in February 2021, first as a tenant, then in September 2021 as an Urban Farm Assistant. Excited to continue working on the farm as a coordinator, his interest in farming comes from a background of interdisciplinary work on land use, climate change, and sustainable food systems. He graduated from McGill in 2016, and is currently pursuing a post-grad certificate in Food Bioscience at Dalhousie’s Agricultural Campus. He’s excited to bring these interests to life on the farm, from projects in the Veith House commercial kitchen, to the Annual Seedling Sale. When not at Veith House you can find him hanging with friends and family, in the woods, or making small-batch tempeh at Veith House!
