Coming up in February:
Talk it Out and Rap Session Youth Workshops
Starting on February 18th, 2020 we will be beginning free workshops for students ages 9-12 that allow for discussion and learning around “tough topics”. Veith House staff have taken notice to the growing opinions and language the kids are using and are taking the initiative to create workshops to engage with youth in the community. These workshops will be offered on Tuesdays from 4:30-6:30pm each week, alternating between Talk it Out (a workshop geared towards students identifying as female) and Rap Session (a workshop geared towards students identifying as male). Both groups are inclusive of students who identify as part of the 2SLGBTQ+ community who are encouraged to join whichever workshop they feel most comfortable in. These workshops cover topics such as bullying, conflict resolution, confidence, identity, sexuality, healthy relationships, puberty, etc. Students who attend and participate in workshop discussions and activities will receive ballots to be entered in a draw at the end of the sessions. If you are interested in registering your child, contact Erika at
March Break Registration
March Break is just around the corner and we are now taking registrations for our R.E.A.C.H. Day Camp. Camp is from 9:00am - 4:00pm with extended hours available upon request for an additional fee. For $60 for the week, your child will be engaged in fun activities at Veith House and around the HRM. Arts, crafts, cooking, baking, skating, swimming and so much more. For more information, contact Erika Mendes our Youth Program Coordinator.
Veith House is providing the opportunity for caregivers and children ages 0-5 to drop-in to connect and socialize with other families and caregivers in a safe and barrier free environment. We will provide the space, toys, art supplies, snacks, coffee and tea. Bring yourself and your little ones. Wednesday mornings from 10:00am to 12:00pm.
Veith House provides this self-directed Art drop-in to community members who have an interest in art. Varieties of supplies are available and we invite anyone to come by Thursday afternoons from 2:00-4:00pm. Snacks, coffee and tea will be provided.
NECC BBQ Planning
We have our planning committee put together but there is still room to get involved. We invite anyone who is interested in helping to plan this years BBQ at Isleville to please reach out. Don’t have the time to commit? That’s ok, we will need lots of volunteers and donations for the big day. Contact Erika to get more information about how you can contribute to this free community event.
Don’t Miss it!
Veith House AGM will be taking place on March 30, 2020 from 5:30-6:30pm. Take this opportunity to learn more about Veith House and have a say in the direction we are taking.
Veith House Interest Piece
February is the month of love! Not just romantic love, but familial, friendship and self-love. Veith House is all about loving yourself and those around you. Creating a space for everyone to feel love and acceptance. One way to show love to those around you is with hand-made gifts!
We love doing arts and crafts with the kids who attend our program and maybe you love to do them at home too. We came across this awesome handmade frame that is great for giving a positive message or even a photo of you and a loved one. We will be making these for sure and we would love to see some of the ones you create! Feel free to send photos to
White Craft Paint
Red and Pink Buttons
Hot Glue/Hot Glue Gun
White Card Stock
Magnets for the back (optional)
Using hot glue, glue together your popsicle sticks into a square shape with the popsicle sticks being doubled on each side making a frame.
Paint your frame white with your paintbrush and white craft paint. Let dry.
Once your frame is dry, you can start carefully gluing your buttons all over the front of the frame and even layering the buttons to create depth and dimension.
Cut a piece of white cardstock a 1/2″ bigger than the opening of your frame, have your kids write their own special message to whom they choose, and carefully hot glue it to the back of the frame.
Optional: Carefully attach magnets onto the back of your frame with a strong adhesive, let dry, and your Valentine Popsicle Stick Craft is ready to wrap and give to the ones you love.
Voices of Veith House
In this section, we highlight some of the fantastic people that make Veith House the great place
that it is. We will look at community users, volunteers, tenants, staff, and the board of directors.
This month we are introducing you to Kirsten Spasyouti, a counselling psychology intern from
Yorkville University doing her practicum placement here at Veith House.
Kirsten is here at Veith House three evenings a week and every Saturday providing free counselling
services through the Wrap Around Wellness program for individuals who are 18 years and older!
Outside of counselling, Kirsten also works with toddlers on the autism spectrum during the day.
\Kirsten can typically be found with a hot coffee in her hand, loves art in all forms, and having lots of
down time with her family at home.
We are always looking for enthusiastic volunteers.
Opportunities to get involved with Veith House include (but are not limited to): Front Desk/Reception, Urban Farm, Special Events, Organizing/Cleaning, Programming, Youth Drop In, and more!
If you or someone you know is interested in getting involved, please let us know! You can drop in Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm to discuss current opportunities, or call us at 902-453-4320.
If you don’t have the time to get involved, but still want to help our organization, we are always welcoming of donations and contributions. Give us a call to discuss this option further.
Funder Shout Out!
Veith House would like to take a moment to thank the following organizations for their generosity that made January possible. Thank you to the Mental Health Foundation for their contribution to the Newcomers Conversation Club. We would also like to acknowledge United Way for their ongoing support.
