Erika -- Veith House

  • Yoga every Tuesday Morning from 10:00-11:30am 

  • After School Drop-in every day from 3:00-4:15pm 

  • Caregiver’s Circle, Wednesday mornings from 10am to 12pm, a program for children 0-5 years old and their caregivers to have a few hours of play time and socialization. 

  • Creative Connections every Thursday afternoon from 2-4pm, an adult art drop-in, provides people with the chance to socialize and express themselves through art. Materials and supplies provided. 

  • Talk it Out and Rap Session workshops for youth ages 9-12. Provides presentations and open discussion around “tough topics” such as puberty, bullying, healthy relationships and identity. Registration required. 

  • Newcomers Conversation Club every Thursday from 10:00 - 1:00. 

 

Anne -- Nurse Coordinator with IWK

  • The clinic provides assessments and services for children from Nova Scotia with a variety of neurodevelopmental and related behavioural problems on an outpatient basis. Referrals for autism diagnostic assessments should be directed to the IWK Autism Team. To be seen in our clinic, a referral is required by a medical doctor, nurse practitioner or dentist.   • Any child in HRM can receive service.

 

Mike -- Halifax Community Health Board

  • All wellness grants were reviewed in December and selections have been made.

        • Funding went to 30 out of 50 applicants

        • They noticed that a majority of applications had to do with food security

  • Attended an Affordable Housing Conference and received a lot of information, would recommend others attend in the future 

 

Natasha -- Mulgrave Park Caring and Learning Centre

  • Women’s unlimited will be doing a presentation about women working in the trades on February 13th from 6-7pm 

  • Black History month event partnered with the Pheonix Youth Centre 

  • Regular programming taking place, view facebook or website to see the calendar. 

 

Barb -- Halifax North Memorial Library

  • Youth and Adult Programs, see the calendar on the website

  • Free concert on Thursday, February 6th - Yvonne Black performing

 

Maya -- Community Health Team 

  • Wellness navigation with self-referral to get connected to community resources and supports

  • Provide health supports as well as social, government and community supports 

  • Monday, February 10th the new calendar is going out for the next 6 months so be sure to check it out.

  • Looking for community advisors to help navigate the direction the health team is taking and to give feedback about programs and navigation

 

Meghann -- YMCA Summer Work Student Exchange

  • Provides the opportunity for students ages 16-17 (by July 1st) to travel to Quebec via train and live with host families. They are provided with the opportunity to work for a nonprofit as well as take part in cultural activities. While there, students are supported by a local YMCA coordinator. 

  • Youth do not have to be fluent in French to attend, will have opportunity to strengthen french as a second language

  • Ability to accommodate youth with needs such as autism, mental health concerns, etc. 

  • The cost is $125, if needed other options can be discussed 

  • Families of the Youth who take part in the program are asked to host a student from Quebec, however if not possible that is ok. Looking for families to act as a host.

Rebecca -- YMCA Employment Centre

  • Provides assistance to people with any employment and career related needs.

  • People can begin seeking services as early as 3 months before graduating high school. 

  • Rebecca works directly with people with disabilities - job coaching services are available

  • Anyone can drop-in to complete the intake assessment form and book an appointment time.

  • Job fairs are held monthly

  • Upcoming: Shannex Job Fair on February 13th, 2020 from 10am to 1pm at the YMCA NS Works Gottingen location. 

  • Upcoming: Shannex Job Fair on February 21st, 2020 from 1pm to 4pm at the YMCA NS Works Wyse Rd location. 

 

Winnie -- George Burton Toast Masters

  • Meeting takes place every 2nd, 4th & 5th Tuesday of the month from 9:45 to 11:45am  at Northwood in the Penthouse

  • The Toastmasters are an international club with the purpose to help people become more comfortable speaking in large groups, making presentations and to become more confident leaders. 

  • There will be an Open House on February 25th in the Penthouse at Northwood from 9:45-11:45am. 

  • Please arrive 15 minutes early for a chance to settle in before the meetings begin.

 

Garth & Catie -- Halifax Association for Community Living

  • Provides transition supports, advocacy and programs for people with disability as well as their family members.

  • There are monthly support groups for self-advocates, siblings and parents. 

  • Activities such as a Valentines Day dance, Art therapy and small field trips are available for involvement. 

 

Mara -- Reachability

  • Supports for anyone who is facing barriers, not limited to people who are facing physical or mental health disabilities. Inclusive of everyone. 

  • One-Step Closer - a 3-week program for people getting ready to face what is next in life. 

  • BOSS - a 2-week anger management course that is trauma informed. 

  • Pre-employment programs are available for those going back to work or entering into the workforce. 

  • Speed Meeting event on February 25th at the Dartmouth DoubleTree  

        • This event gives people the opportunity to practice their interviewing skills in a low stress environment. Like speed dating, participants will be matched up with multiple employers for mini interviews with the hope of overcoming any fears or anxiety around job interviews. 

        • There is a chance that participants could receive a formal interview from employers that are present. 

  • Partner program with McPhee for 16-30 year old youth to get involved in a free film-making course. It takes place every Thursday night and participants have the opportunity to create a short film to be entered in the Bluenose Ability Arts and Film Festival (more information about event on facebook) 

 

Adrienne -- Harbourside Rotary Club 

  • Rotary club provides support to community organizations in the North End of Halifax 

  • Currently supporting Joseph Howe Elementary School with their Wednesday Morning Breakfast Program

  • Getting involved with students at local universities to create projects that support the community

  • Provides opportunities for High School students to experience life abroad through the International Rotary Club Exchange Program. This year the Harbourside Rotary Club is able to fund a students costs to participate. 

  • Involved in funding other international projects

        • Providing power for a Recreation Centre in Gambia

        • Working to eliminate Polio Disease since 1985. There are only 2 hot spots left in the world. 

  • Host events such as RibFest and a Mother’s Day brunch to help raise funds to give back to the North End Community. 

 

Mbarka -- Community Member

  • Looking for ways to volunteer and get involved in the community

  • Recent Civil Engineering graduate from Dalhouse 

 

Carla -- Pheonix Youth & Community Centre

  • Monday - intramural program @ Highland Park Junior High from 3:00 to 4:45

  • Monday - Cooking program for Youth from 5:00-7:00pm (this week they made rotisserie chicken and rice) 

  • Tuesday & Thursday - Afterschool Drop-in until 5 pm

  • Tuesday & Thursday - Tutoring from 5:00-7:00 pm (teachers and volunteers on-site)

  • Wednesday - NEW Cultural Exploration Program - opportunity to learn about the different cultures around the world with focus on the cultures in the Mulgrave community.

  • Friday - 4-on-4 Basketball League from 3:30-5:30pm at Needham Rec Centre. This week coach Joe Mosher will be dropping in to give some pointers.

  • Women of Mulgrave program taking place. This month it is a paint night with a focus on Black history. Registration is required. 

  • Event: Community Kitchens on February 21st. A member of the community brings in a recipe and other participants have the opportunity to learn how to make it. 

  • Event: Speak it - A Black History Month Event on February 20th. There will be spoken word, dance performances and drumming. Members of the community will be cooking for the event. 

 

Sarah -- St. George’s Youth Net

  • Continuing their after school program daily 

  • Teen night program every Tuesday and Thursday from 5:00-7:00pm for youth ages 13-18. 

  • Ongoing lunch program with Joseph Howe Elementary school. 

  • Summer Camps and Wilderness Treks taking place this summer, registration opens in March. 

 

Tressa -- HRCE

  • Works closely with parents to gain and understand the support available to them. 

  • Attending to keep up to date about resources available in the community
