Newcomer Outreach Worker Opening

This is a designated position for someone with lived experience as a Newcomer to Canada.
 

The Newcomer Outreach Worker is responsible for reaching out to the Newcomer Community in Halifax with a focus on the North End, and for supporting delivery of programming for families who are new to Canada. Our Newcomer program ensures the participants have a non-judgemental, welcoming space where they can engage with one another and learn more about Canadian culture while maintaining their own cultural customs, values and practices. The Newcomer Outreach Worker also connects people with community resources that will assist them in establishing themselves in Canada.


Department: Newcomer Program
Reports to: Executive Director
Hours: Part Time, 18hr/wk - Tuesday - Thursday, 9:00 - 3:00
Term: This position runs through to the end of 2025. Extension beyond 2025 is contingent upon funding
Wage: $19.11/hr

Responsibilities
Key Areas of responsibilities include but are not limited to:

 

Client/Community Relations
● Maintain professional and friendly relations with our clients and community members, including fellow community organizations
● Maintain confidentiality of information regarding clients and their families
● Promote and attend monthly events and activities in order to increase participation 
● Collaborate with other community based organizations in serving the needs of our community
Program Delivery
● Support coordination and delivery of programs and services
● Engage clients in interactive activities including skill based (sewing/cooking); cultural based; food based; language based (English)

Leadership
● Recruit, train, schedule, supervise, support and provide leadership to students and volunteers as needed
● Lead by example in demonstrating a positive attitude and actions through a display of courtesy, service, cooperation, hospitality, sensitivity, and professionalism

Program Planning, Reporting, Administration
● Support in the development of programs and services in consultation with team members and in response to participant and community need
● Facilitate programs as appropriate
● Provide necessary information and support for detailed record keeping of program outputs
● Keep up to date statistics on each program offered through the fiscal year
● Assist in completing and submitting required paperwork and reports
● Assist with the preparation of marketing, promotional materials relating to the delivery of Veith House Newcomers programming


Team Work & Organizational Support
● Be committed to the Veith House mission, vision, values and purpose
● Collaborate with other team members to foster the success of our organization as a whole.
● Greet clients and provide a prompt, courteous and welcoming experience.
● Assist when required/as possible with other areas of the organization
● Actively participate in events designed to enhance employee relations

Qualifications
Education & Experience

● 3 or more years prior community outreach and support experience
● Lived experience as a Newcomer to Canada
● Understanding of Immigration Challenges for Newcomers, programs, policies, support services networks
● Technology functional aptitude with MSOffice, Google Drive
● Speak more than one language
● Asset but not required: Speak Swahili, French or Somali


Work Conditions/Environment
Work will generally take place at Veith House, but will require travel to meetings to other organizations and to support Newcomers within the community

 

Physical
● Veith House is a 4 story building, and employees will need to be able to climb stairs.
